Parathyroid

The surgical team at Minimally Invasive and Bariatrics Surgery (MIB) specializes in parathyroid surgery. This procedure partially or entirely removes the parathyroid gland and is used in cases of high calcium, abnormal growth, or cancer.

Parathyroid Q & A
What are Parathyroid Glands?
The parathyroid glands are four small glands located in the neck on the back of the thyroid. These glands produce PTH (parathyroid hormone) which controls the levels of calcium in the body.
What is a Parathyroidectomy?

A parathyroidectomy is the surgical removal of one or more of the parathyroid glands. Surgery is the only proven solution to treat an enlarged parathyroid. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and involves one large incision in the upper-front of the neck for open surgery. Three to five 2-3 centimeter incisions in the lower neck are used during the minimally-invasive technique.

What Necessitates a Parathyroidectomy?

There are many conditions which may require the patient to undergo a parathyroidectomy. The three most common problems are hyperparathyroidism (parathyroid swelling), cancer, and other abnormal growths. Possible symptoms of a parathyroid disease include:

  • Fragile bone

  • Kidney stones

  • Fatigue

  • Bone or joint pain

  • Nausea

If you experience any of these symptoms and believe you may be suffering from a parathyroid disease, contact your doctor immediately.

What Can I expect for my Parathyroidectomy?

Every parathyroidectomy is different and requires specific preparatory steps based upon the individual patient. Dr. Bello and the MIB team will sit down with each patient to discuss their specific procedure’s details. In general, most patients spend only one night in the hospital or are discharged the day of the surgery. When the patient is discharged depends on their state at the time.

After the procedure, patients may resume regular activity as much as they can tolerate. Walking outside, going up and down stairs and performing light activities are encouraged. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting is discouraged.
