BMI Q & A
What is BMI?
BMI is a measure of your body size that’s determined by the ratio of your weight to your height. Technically, BMI is determined by dividing your weight by the square of your height. The resulting number indicates whether you’re underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

These are the guidelines for BMI scores in adults:
  • BMI below 18.8 is underweight

  • BMI of 18.9 to 24.9 is a healthy weight

  • BMI of 25 to 29.9 is overweight

  • BMI of 30 to 34.9 is class I obesity

  • BMI of 35 to 39.9 is class II, serious obesity

  • A BMI of 40 and greater is class III, severe obesity

The higher your BMI, the greater your risk of developing serious chronic health conditions.

Why should I be concerned about my BMI?

Fat cells are highly active, producing hormones and other substances that influence your overall health. The more excess fat you have, the more these biochemicals get out of balance. As a result, being overweight and obese increase your risk of developing:

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Obstructive sleep apnea

  • Kidney and liver disease

  • Colon cancer

  • Breast and endometrial cancers

Additionally, obesity significantly increases your risk of musculoskeletal problems, such as knee osteoarthritis.

If you’re only 10 pounds overweight, the force on your knee increases by 30-60 pounds every time you take a step. In obese patients, that translates into about 300-600 pounds of pressure on your knees when you walk.
